The OPPI Youth Sailing Pram
Now in Canada for only $2,195

The Optimist, the world’s largest one-design sailing pram fleet for children aged 6 to 10, is a highly popular and competitive sailing trainer around the world. For many years the Oppi Company in Holland has been building an Optimist-like pram that offers all of the features and benefits of the Optimist — plus more — at a fraction of the cost.

The Oppi is built from polyethylene materials instead of fibreglass to offer exceptional durability at a very affordable price. As this material is not class legal for the Optimist, Oppis cannot be used in international Optimist regatta competitions. However, a new class, called Oppi Youth Sailing Pram, was developed parallel to the Optimist class. In addition to competitive sailing in this new sailing class, the Oppi, has quickly gained popularity in sailing schools, yacht clubs, beach resort hotels, marinas and summer camps as a rugged recreational and training boat.

The experienced and innovative builders behind the Oppi developed an exciting new recreation and training boat that performs like an Optimist, while offering superior design and durability at a fraction of the cost of its competitor.

A few of the unique features of the Oppi include:

Double Bottom
— Oppi is self draining and after a capsize almost instantly ready to sail without the need of emptying with a bucket

• Rounded Partially Enclosed Deck
— nicely formed to offer floatation for safety, while all corners - from the centreboard box to the deck, bow to transom - are well rounded, pleasing to the eye, and, most importantly – less likely to cause bruising or injury

• Pleasant Coloured Mainsail with Luff Sleeve — slides easily over the mast (unlike the Optimist which uses grommets and lashes to the mast)

• Hiking Straps
— adjustable, well designed and recessed

Hardware, Rope and Blocks
— modern quality and ergonomic positioning

• Hull, Mast and Sail
— very similar to the Optimist with minor improvements to enhance the overall performance and appearance of the boat

• Centreboard & Rudder
—nicely made from plywood with several coats of high gloss varnish

• Tiller and Extension

— anodized aluminum

The single major difference between the Oppi and the Optimist is theunique polyethylene material used in the Oppi’s construction instead of fibreglass. This modern polymer ensures that the Oppi, unlike the Optimist, is rugged, flexible, will not chip and is highly resistant to scratches. In short, the Oppi will significantly outlast any plywood or fibreglass construction while also providing improved performance and superior aesthetics — all at a fraction of the cost!
